Keeping motivation high when starting a new business can be tough. When we first start, we are filled with inspiration and an eagerness to get our business baby up and out into the world, but as we get further into it, our to-do lists grows and our light at the end of the tunnel appears to fade to black. This is the point where most people give up. They are overwhelmed with information overload, not sure what thing to focus on that’s going to see them achieve results.

Here’s our Top 5 Tips on how to remain focused, and keep our eye on the prize so that you don’t find yourself paralysed with indecision and overwhelm:

1. WRITE DOWN YOUR WHY:

The best thing you can do when you’re feeling overwhelmed is stop, and think about WHY you’ve decided to start a business. What problem are you solving? Why are you passionate about your solution? Write the answers to these questions down then stick it on your wall so you can keep them top of mind.

2. STOP, COLLABORATE AND LISTEN:

When you’re overwhelmed with the sheer enormity of the task ahead of you, stop what you’re doing, take an hour or two break, and pop on your favourite podcast – preferably an inspirational business one. Some of our faves are ‘How I Built This’ by NPR and ‘Unstoppable’ by Kerwin Rae.

3. FILL YOUR BUCKETS:

A great productivity hack is to break your to-do list into buckets – your “Critical” bucket, your “Nice To Have” bucket, and your “Can Be Done Later” bucket. Concentrate on your Critical bucket first, launch, then move onto the other two.

4. SMALL WINS:

A key motivational tool for us here at BMH is celebrating the small wins. Set mini-milestones and mini-rewards for yourself along the way. Written and scheduled one week’s worth of insta posts? Treat yourself to a nice take-away. Won that client proposal? Grab some retail therapy. You get the gist.

5. SHOUT FROM THE ROOFTOPS:

Accountability can be a great motivator, so we encourage you to shout your goals from the rooftops, tell your network what you’re doing, encourage them to help you and follow along your journey. Knowing people are eager to support you will help keep you on track and moving forward.
